Review :
Sherman’s Way follows Sherman (Michael Shulman), a law student who is just about ready to join the real world and bring honor to the family name, and make money and all that junk. A somewhat daunting task, as it is revealed almost immediately that his mother is on the cover of the current issue of Time magazine, and he comes from loads of money.

After a fight with his girlfriend, wherein she accuses him of lacking spontaneity, he travels across country the country to California to visits her at her fathers house by a vineyard. Unsurprisingly she has already taken up with somebody else, and Sherman’s attempt to be spontaneous is too little too late. Good thing too, because a dude and his girlfriend chilling out at a vineyard and learning to relax would make a crap plot for a movie (but sounds like a pretty darn good plot for a porno).

Enter Palmer “The Bomber” Van Dyke (James LeGross) a former Olympic skier who claims that time “is just a point on a line, you can move it one way or the other.” Relaxing ensues. Lessons are learned. Cute girl is met.

No reinventing the wheel here, but the movie manages well, practicing what it preaches giving us a mellow and enjoyable two hours of entertainment. Shulman is solid as the uptight Sherman, but manages to avoid being obnoxious, the most common pitfall for this type of character. Legross does him one better as the slacker Palmer. His performance is particularly enjoyable after having seen him play the uber tense other side of the coin so many times. The lovable misfit side of the cast is rounded out by Enrico Colantoni as the affable DJ, and Brooke Nevin as the obligatory sweet/hot/relaxed girl. The both acquit themselves well, especially Colantoni.

The only part of the film that even attempts originality comes in the form of a bit of give and taker between Sherman and Palmer. While learning to relax, Sherman also manages to teach Palmer to focus on a goal, and relax just a tiny bit less. This adds some much needed depth to their relationship.

This movie won’t change your life. It won’t even make you laugh out loud more than once or twice, but it’s a great way to relax on a Saturday. Maybe afterward you could take a stroll through the park or something.
