Review :
The buzz and hype are unwarranted as despite a couple of chuckles this movie is a tired excuse for comedy attempting to cash in on the loyalty the fan base has to the series. Enduring this pillaging from George Lucas himself is one thing, but when fellow fans do it I feel violated. Sure it has its moments but low expectations are a must for anyone to enjoy this movie.
The story of five friends on a road trip to Lucas’ Skywalker ranch to watch Episode I before its release in 1999 has had a difficult journey to the screen. The original script was written in 1997 and was supposed to become a low-budget homage to fans everywhere. Fast forward ten years and the movie finally gets made but in the editing stages movie boss Harvey Weinstein decides to cut out certain plot points deemed to be too much of a downer. Despite not having seen the film, real fanboys the world over protested this “censorship” and even went as far as staging non virtual protests, pickets and all. After much back and forth the film has finally been released in its original version.
