Review :
The basic premise of the film is a van load of troubled youths are sentenced to community service at Grizzly Park, where they (under the supervision of a park ranger played extremely well by veteren character actor Glenn Morshower) are to spend one week hiking, camping out and picking up trash along the trails. Unfortunately for them, and predictibly for us, things don't go very well for them.
I don't want to give too much away, but as you expect, the title animal goes on a vicous rampage. While this somewhat lower budgeted production suffers from the usual low budget problems, sub par acting, bad dialogue, predictable script, the biggest problem was the extremely slow pace. A little bit happens in the beginning, then the next hour is nothing but a bunch of kids hiking, camping and mouthing off to the ranger.
On the bright side, the overall look of the film is very polished, and when the action does start, there are some really well done, and extremely gory scenes. Unfortunately, the action only takes place, for the most part, in the last 20 minutes.
This film had a lot of potential, but missed its mark by having way too much talking, and not enough killing. I would definately give writer/director Tom Skull's next film a shot because clearly there is some talent there, but this film just fell a little short.
